How Concerned Should Barcelona Be About Frenkie de Jong’s Contract Situation?

Barcelona have been busy in recent weeks, focusing on securing long-term commitments from key first-team players. Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo are currently in discussions to extend their contracts beyond 2026. However, Frenkie de Jong’s future remains much more uncertain.

Like his teammates, de Jong’s contract also runs until 2026, which is why Barcelona are eager to secure a long-term extension before next summer. Failure to do so would likely push the club to seek a transfer in order to avoid the risk of losing him as a free agent in 2027.

For now, de Jong’s situation is looking precarious. Despite having a contract offer on the table for several months, he has yet to make a decision. Barcelona’s optimism seems to be fading as the Dutch midfielder has only just returned to action after an extended injury layoff but has not given any indication of his intent to stay.

If de Jong were to be listed for transfer, he would certainly attract significant interest, especially from Premier League clubs. Manchester United, in particular, might revive their pursuit of the Dutchman, after having a bid accepted for him back in 2022. At that time, despite his strong relationship with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, de Jong turned down a move to Old Trafford.

Barcelona’s approach should be straightforward. If de Jong agrees to a contract extension, it would be a positive development, especially since new coach Hansi Flick could help elevate his performances, which have dipped over the past 12 to 18 months. However, if the Dutchman remains non-committal, a transfer would make sense.

The rise of young talents like Marc Casado and Marc Bernal this season has strengthened Barcelona’s midfield depth, reducing the necessity of keeping de Jong. Should an attractive offer come next summer, the club could capitalize on it, freeing up wages and potentially using the funds to strengthen other areas.

Barcelona’s options in midfield are extensive. Beyond Casado and Bernal, Gavi and Pedri are reliable pivots, while Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia can step into the role if needed. La Masia also continues to produce quality talents, so Barcelona have ample reasons not to hesitate if de Jong shows little interest in remaining at the club.
