Giorgi Mamardashvili Sends a Warning to Alisson Becker

Liverpool’s recent acquisition of Giorgi Mamardashvili for a reported £25 million, plus £4 million in add-ons, has stirred excitement among fans. The 24-year-old goalkeeper was signed from Valencia as the club capitalized on the opportunity to bring in a top talent without facing significant competition.

As part of the deal, Mamardashvili will spend the upcoming season on loan back at Valencia, but he is already eyeing his future at Liverpool. In a recent interview, he made it clear that he intends to challenge Alisson Becker for the starting position. Given Alisson’s established importance in the Liverpool squad, this declaration could lead to some tension within the dressing room.

When discussing his move, Mamardashvili expressed enthusiasm for Liverpool’s project, stating, “I was attracted by Liverpool’s project when the club’s representatives met me.” He further emphasized his determination, saying, “I will fight for the starting goalkeeper position even if the current goalkeeper does not leave the team.”

What This Means for Kelleher and Alisson

With Mamardashvili’s arrival, it seems likely that Caoimhin Kelleher will depart from Liverpool, with the Georgian poised to take on Kelleher’s role for at least one season. Alisson, whose contract runs until 2027, could potentially be sold in the summer of 2026, allowing Mamardashvili to step into the number-one position.

For the 2025/26 season, it’s expected that Mamardashvili will be utilized in domestic cup competitions and possibly some European fixtures, giving him a taste of action while he prepares to claim the starting role. The competition between Mamardashvili and Alisson will certainly be one to watch, as both players aim to secure their place as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper in the seasons to come.
